Newly elected to the board of directors of the American Friends of the U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (AFBSF), Steven B. Feinstein, MD hails from Chicago where he a Professor of Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He brings to this new appointment an abundance of experience both in scientific research and board leadership. A cardiologist, he is recognized as one of the world’s leading pioneers in the development of noninvasive contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging techniques and invented the first FDA-approved ultrasound contrast agent, which enables physicians to utilize safe and relatively simple ultrasound imaging techniques to diagnose cardiac abnormalities without radiation, dye or invasive diagnostic procedures. In addition, Dr. Feinstein is an NIH supported researcher and has authored more than 270 publications including scientific articles, subject reviews and chapters. He has served his field in leadership positions with the International Contrast Ultrasound Society (ICUS).

Dr. Feinstein shared what’s important to him outside of his work life, “Family is the key. My wife Linda and I are blessed that all our grown children live in the Chicago area. My wife is a practicing attorney. As we both work in downtown Chicago, we commute together everyday. Often one of our children will join us downtown for dinner.” Both Linda and Dr. Feinstein are active in the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Together they enjoy engaging with political representatives in Washington, DC advocating in support of issues vital to the state of Israel.

“It is a matter of pure good luck,” stated Yair Rotstein Executive Director the U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF). “Each of our 18 to 19 scientific review panels has at least one member from the United States. When we searched for a superb American delegate for our panel on Cardiology, we identified Dr. Feinstein. He had once submitted his own application to the BSF with a colleague from the Technion. Dr. Feinstein came to Israel to serve on the review panel and became quite enthusiastic with what he observed. He offered to give us a hand and help. We took him up on it!”

Dr. Feinstein has “hit the ground running” assisting immediately with several exciting fundraising opportunities. He is clearly willing to advance the efforts of the AFBSF engaging both his scientific expertise and personal relationships to seek additional support for collaborations between U.S. and Israeli researchers.

“I promise to do my best in support of the mission!” he recently related. “The funds raised by the AFBSF significantly impacts advances made possible by scientific researchers both in Israel and America. I look forward to working closely with fellow board members as together we promote this important work.”
