Janet Macdonald, assistant professor at Vanderbilt University, finished her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Alberta and began thinking about her future. She wanted to continue with post-doctorate work and sought a mentor who was known as a leading figure in in the field of chemistry. She was advised to approach Prof. Uri Banin at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. She wrote to him and he accepted her for a two-year post-doctorate position. “I had a terrific two years in Jerusalem,” said Macdonald. They discovered a new type of hexagon shaped nanoparticle that, when photographed from above, resembled the six-pointed Star of David, a centuries-old Jewish symbol. “It made quite a sensation in the scientific world,” continued Macdonald, “many had a lot of fun that a laboratory in Israel made this discovery.” Afterwards she and Banin continue their scientific collaboration on Hybrid Nanoparticles of Wurtzite-Copper Indium Sulfide.

Said Yair Rotstein, Executive Director of the U.S. – Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF), “We annually give out the Bergmann Memorial Award to a young scientist who offers an exceptional research proposal. Professor Macdonald’s was outstanding. The National Science Foundation also gave her a career award in Chemistry and recognized her as exceptional scientist. Her research into nano technology and its use in clean energy is very exciting.”
